Pretty good. Story moves along and the pace is good. I think the ending was done well, and did make me want to at least start the second book.Only drawback was that something just felt slightly off with the action events. Almost like they were too "solve this puzzle with the tools you have" type of encounters for the characters - almost like watching video game characters level up, which got bit repetitive. Not really bad, just different, but made me rush through some of it in the second half of the book. I only mention it because it's in such stark contrast to what I thought was really good setting and character development.
But overall, I liked the story and where things went at the end.

Raziel Shadow Joseph Robert Lewis 9781500333409 Books Reviews
The main character this story was a young man who had a grand plan was disappointed along the way several times and developed further as a character as a result of each circumstance. The other characters in the story were interesting and original. I enjoyed this book and would recommend it to others.
The writing was fine and I didn't notice a lot of editing issues. The plot was original and had real promise. But I just couldn't enjoy the book as I thought the actions by the characters weren't logical. Major spoilers follow the first thing that set me off is why such a small contingent of warriors was sent to fight the demons (who basically took over a whole country) and why the supposed prince wasn't allowed to brief them or at least go with them (despite the queen hinting at when they would leave). It seems to me that without the prince stowing away on the ship, the small group of warriors would have been killed at sea by the octopus-like creature before ever getting to the kingdom. They then would have been killed on the beach, near the forest, etc etc. This group was completely naive and unprepared for their mission. They would have been killed again in the throne room (had the coup not already been planned by the natives). I couldn't understand why the lead mage didn't tell anyone his plan for reestablishing the barrier (of course he dies and they have to figure it out themselves).
The author claims he wants to write about strong female characters that his daughters can look up to. I would not want my daughter to read this book. A female warrior and the "prince" become romantically involved and appear to love each other, but she sleeps with another female because she feels sorry for her. This seems to make sense to the "prince" so he lets it go. I may be a prude, but I think there are other ways to console someone than sleep with them (I'm sure my wife would not like it if I slept with someone else because they were depressed). Then later the 2 females and "prince" have a 3-way with the prince ending up with the depressed female while the warrior female goes home. I just could not follow this relationship logically and wouldn't recommend the book for younger readers.
Anyway, I also thought the book was too descriptive in places and became boring, but some readers enjoy that type of writing. I will not be continuing the series.
Raziel's Shadow, an epic fantasy novel, is a great read. I like books that take me on a roller coaster ride of emotions and this book did it for me. It was slow, fast, up, down, with just the right amount of tension at the right times, some unexpected twists and turns, a smattering of theology, and some romance thrown in as icing on the cake. While Mr. Lewis suggests the romance may be offensive to some, it was tastefully presented. You should check his blog before you let teens read it though. With the inclusion of angels and demons it also appealed to my sense of spirituality. All in all, I thought this was one of the best yet from Joseph Robert Lewis.
jk
The book is really awesome! The plot is very straight forward. It makes me wonder about what happens next!
Young man strives for glory, it's snatched away, finds love looses it, finds true friendships and more of the pain of loss, fights demons and gouls, and in the ends finds - well a chance for a new beginning. The story is a complete story but opens the door for continuing the saga of the boy and his new friends
I picked this book and once I started reading I was hooked. I loved the story line, the characters were great. Zerai, Kiya,Veneka were so real. I loved that Zerai was a Faulkner, Kiya and Ras Meron were cleric warriors. I can't wait for the next book. A book well written Joseph Robert Lewis.
This book was not what I was expecting --- but in a good way!
My favorite book by Joseph Robert Lewis so far! An epic adventure in an entirely new world. The characters were easy to relate to and well developed. Every chapter was chock full of dangerous monsters, magical creatures, near death dilemmas, and heroic solutions.
My only complaint would be that it took too long to finally meet one of the angels (I guess my hope was that they might be the main characters). But, then again, it didn't detract from the over-all story and, if anything, actually pushed me to keep reading because I knew eventually one would appear. When that moment did finally arrive it was spectacular and left me wanting more.
I can't wait to read the next book in the trilogy!
