Telling the truth could get them killed. Remaining silent could be worse. When Cooper, Hiro, and Gordy witness a robbery that leaves a man in a coma, they find themselves tangled in a web of mystery and deceit that threatens their lives. After being seen by the criminals - who may also be cops - Cooper makes everyone promise never to reveal what they have seen. Telling the truth could kill them. But remaining silent means an innocent man takes the fall and a friend never receives justice. Is there ever a time to lie? And what happens when the truth is dangerous? The three friends, trapped in a code of silence, must face the consequences of choosing right or wrong when both options have their price.

Code of Silence Living a Lie Comes with a Price A Code of Silence Novel (Audible Audio Edition) Tim Shoemaker Tim Lundeen Books

Shoemaker's suspenseful story will engage young readers and adults alike. When three seventh-grade best friends witness a savage robbery at a friend's restaurant, they agree to a code of silence to protect themselves from the attackers who know witnesses escaped. But keeping the code means telling lies, which spiral out of control and threaten to destroy their friendship. The book addresses the gray area of what doing the right thing looks like in a sticky situation. I highly recommend this book. The strong male protagonist voice will resonate well with boys, and the strong female supporting role also makes this book one girls will enjoy as well.

Code of Silence Living a Lie Comes with a Price A Code of Silence Novel (Audible Audio Edition) Tim Shoemaker Tim Lundeen Books Reviews

My 13 son loved it! He is a bookworm, but this book had him moving (wiggling or squirming) and exclaiming with the intensity. He really got into it more so than any other book I have watched him read. I heard Tim Shoemaker say that he has another book he is trying to publish that is different from this series, I will be stalking looking for it!
I ordered all three books in this series and gave them to my three sons for Christmas. My oldest (12) is a hunter/fisherman/ and basketball player extraordinaire. Unless it's the state Game Fish & Parks handbook, he doesn't have much interest in reading.

So on a recent road trip I read the first four chapters aloud to all three in hopes of getting them hooked. I never got my hands on the book again. My 12 year old read it for hours at a time. When he finished, he passed it along to his brother (11) and then promptly started the second book. When he went to bed that night he said, "Mom want me to tell you what happened in the first chapter?" He proceeded to retell the events, and I said, "Wow, sounds like an exciting chapter." He answered, "Every chapter is that way."
Cooper, his cousin Gordy, and friend Hiroko hang out at their favorite restaurant playing one last video game while the owner closes up. Just as the kids prepare to leave, two thugs break in and attack the owner, leaving him dying on the floor while they ransack the safe upstairs. From their hiding place, the kids hear everything, and barely escape alive. The last one out, Cooper leaves behind his backpack and comes face to face with one of the thieves who threatens to find him and kill him and his family.

Cooper refuses to report what they saw to the police because the thieves wore police uniform pants. What if he spills the beans to a crooked cop who then carries out the threat against his family? To protect himself and his loved ones, he persuades Gordy and Hiro to pledge a code of silence, refusing to tell anyone what they've seen and heard. But that means lying about where they were that night. The first lie leads to another, and then another. The presence of the backpack alerts police to the possibility of a witness and as they increase the pressure to find that witness, Cooper's lies come fast and thick. But his dishonesty builds a wall between him and his closest friends, as well as harming his relationship with his parents. How can he dig himself out of this hole, and help find the thieves before they find him?

Boys especially will love the spell-binding action and suspense of this novel, but there's plenty for girls to enjoy, too. Cooper's, Gordy's and Hiro's motivations are believable and the realistic consequences of their choices create plenty of opportunities for kids to think about the virtue of honesty and the results of excusing one small lie.

A good Y A book is one that will keep the interest of kids and adults, and this book fits that criteria. I'm a middle-aged woman interested in writing novels for junior high age kids. So when I heard about this book, I downloaded the free trial edition to my to see what it was like. Started reading it while working out on the elliptical machine at the Y. The trial edition ended when Cooper races away from the robbery on his bike, meets an oncoming car in the drive-thru lane of a fast food place and flips over the bike and lands flat on his back on the pavement. I cried out loud, "Nooooooo! It can't end there!" I couldn't connect to the Y's wifi to buy the whole book and I still have at least 10 minutes left on the machine. I bought the book as soon as I got home and read it every chance I got. I highly recommend it!
This mystery grabbed my attention quickly and kept me guessing until the end. A band of friends witness a robbery at their favorite burger joint. The few facts they can piece together raise more questions than answers at first. The police may be involved, so they are slow to tell adults about their secrets. Adopting a Code of Silence, they learn the perils of keeping secrets and the potentially huge cost of being wrong about who they can trust. I loved the story and will definitely read more from Tim Shoemaker.
Cooper, Hiro and Gordy are best friends who like to spend afternoons after school at their favorite handout Frank-N-Stein's Restaurant. One evening they decided to play one more arcade game while their friend, mentor and owner Frank locks up. What happens next is the beginning of a nightmare. The three friends are trapped in the restaurant and witness the robbery and beating of Frank. When one of the robbers pulls and leaves the video that would incriminate them in the robbery, Cooper takes the opportunity to snatch it and escape. The others get away and Cooper is caught and his house keys taken and he is left with a threat to his family. He and his friends get away. They make a pact to keep what they know silent. They don't know who they can trust because the robbers were dressed in police uniforms. Unfortunately Cooper's backpack left at the scene put the cops and the criminals on his trail. His lies upon lies begin to catch up with him. It strains his relationship with his parents, his friends and with his relationship with God. This was one of those books that once you start you can't put it down. The messages about doing the right thing, friendship, loyalty, honesty, lies and telling the truth can be found all through the book. When I give my book talk about this book I'm going to ask my students up front if they believe it is ever okay to tell a lie and ask for examples. Then I will introduce this book because people need to realize that just because you think it is okay to lie, there are consequences for each lie you tell. This is a book I definitely recommend to my students and all adults who love to read a good mystery.
I received a review copy in exchange for my honest review.
